Teach your little guy that losing can be fun too. Sure, little Johnny’s team lost miserably, but give him an award anyway so he doesn’t feel bad about sucking. We handed out “participation” awards like candy on Halloween. The time of making our children make their own way in life is over. The time of making our children tough is gone. And we can’t have children walking away from the playing field feeling like a loser. Why? Well, if there were winners, there would have to be losers. We taught them that sports were not about winning. Singing the Black National Anthem only amplifies our nation’s differences instead of showing a united country.Īmerican parents made a grave error in raising their children. My point? The Black National Anthem is a wonderful song, but when it’s sung as our national anthem, just before the American National Anthem, it only shows the disharmony in our nation. In order to win, which was our main objective, we had to be many voices with a singular tone.

It took me a full year before I could “blend” with the other voices. My voice was so distinct it would stand out like Paris Hilton at an Applied Mathematics Symposium. (The judges were none the wiser) The reason for me not singing with the others wasn’t clear at the time, but later I learned why. I would stand, smile, and lip-synch the songs. In my first year with the group, however, I didn’t get to sing in some of the numbers. We won lots of awards because our director was maniacal when it came to choir practice.
We also did dance routines for each number. Okay, okay, maybe not great, but it was good enough to get the coveted solos in our high school Chamber Singers group. But if you’re going to play “The Star Spangled Banner,” play “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” too. There’s something to be said for not playing any anthem before the games, for just starting them. It’s been played at other sporting events. “Lift Every Voice and Sing” was played before the start of Week 1 games during the 2020 season, and at Super Bowl LV. It’s too bad the NBA didn’t continue putting social-justice messages on jerseys, like they did in the bubble at the end of last season. So why are some people, and right-wing media outlets, mad about it?įront Office Sports, which broke the story, also reported Wednesday that the NFL will have social-justice messaging on fields and on helmets.
